Summary
On this polar wildlife holiday we will travel far north of the Arctic Circle into a land of perpetual summer daylight and dramatic landscapes, populated by some of Europe’s most iconic birds and mammals. We will split our time around the Varanger Peninsula in northernmost Norway and the spectacular Arctic island of Spitsbergen. We begin with a flight to Ivalo in Finland and a drive north to the Varanger Peninsula. We have four nights here split between Kirkenes, Vardo and Kongsfjord, from where we search for such avian delights as Red-necked Phalarope, Bluethroat, lekking Ruff, Long-tailed Skua and much more. We then fly 600 miles further north to Spitsbergen for our final four nights on this high Arctic island. Bathed in 24-hour daylight, we will explore Svalbard’s spectacular glacier cut coastline by boat in search of King Eider, Grey Phalarope, Brünnich’s Guillemot, Little Auk, Walrus, Arctic Fox, Beluga and, we hope, Polar Bear!
- A rare opportunity to combine north Norway with the Arctic island of Spitsbergen
- Enjoy the birdlife & landscapes of Varanger Fjord
- Long-tailed Skua, King Eider, Red-necked & Grey Phalaropes, Bluethroat & lekking Ruff
- Look for Walrus, Arctic Fox, Svalbard Reindeer & Beluga
- Spectacular polar scenery including huge glaciers & jagged snow-capped mountains
- 24-hour daylight and the ‘midnight sun’
- Led by expert naturalist guide
Grading
This tour is graded A and consists of mostly short walks of a couple of kilometres or so. The holiday is therefore suitable for anyone who enjoys walking in the countryside and is of an ‘average’ level of fitness. Please be aware, however, that the terrain is often rough, and sometimes icy, underfoot (there are no footpaths in Svalbard!) and as such the trip not suitable for anyone who has any difficulty in walking or is not steady on rough/icy terrain.
