Summary
Late winter is an excellent time to visit the counties of Fife and Angus, located on the east coast of central Scotland. Though often overlooked by the visiting naturalist, combined the counties boast a huge variety of habitats and, with it, a great diversity of plant and animal species all within a relatively small area. At this time of year, however, it is the birdlife that is of greatest interest, with the varied coastline being particularly productive. The rich, fertile waters of the many picturesque bays are home to immense winter flocks of seaduck, especially scoters and Long-tailed Duck along with various divers, grebes and auks.
- Visit the largest lowland loch for ducks, swans and geese
- Watch flocks of seaducks & divers offshore
- Visit Scotland’s largest reedbed for Bearded Tit
- Ptarmigan in winter plumage & Mountain Hare in winter coats
- Stunning scenery
- Possibility of Golden Eagle
Grading
Grade A/B. We will undertake mainly gentle wildlife walks during the course of the holiday (with any more demanding walks always being optional). It may be wet and muddy underfoot, which can make the paths a bit slippery.

Tour Leader: Mark Wood
After spending much of his early childhood exploring the woods and fields around his house in Fife, Scotland, Mark quickly developed a curiosity for the natural world around him. With the closest nature reserve being RSPB Loch Leven it did not take long for a keen interest in birds to follow. Going on to study Conservation Biology at Aberdeen University Mark’s passion for wildlife in its many facets and a desire to protect it would only continue to grow.
Much of his working life has been spent as an Ecologist in Scotland but the desire to travel and find exotic bird species is a constant draw. This has led to many long overseas adventures including Australia and New Zealand, where he was able to work on the Kakapo project and see this endangered parrot. Driving from Scotland to Mongolia and back in 2019, exploring much of central Asia and Russia along the way, a lifelong dream! As well as many other fantastic, nature rich locations across North and South America, Africa, Europe and East Asia.
Mark started leading tours to Shetland for Naturetrek in 2022.
