Several life birds - Purple Sandpipers were great. Having enough time for a walk at Godrevy in dramatic weather conditions and access to Walmsley was a bonus. CS Devon

Summary
Cornwall’s wild beauty and mild Atlantic climate make it a superb winter birding destination — and the perfect setting for a thrilling Naturetrek bird race. In January 2026, join us as we scour coast, estuary, farmland and moor guided by local experts who know every hidden corner and likely rarity hotspot.
The goal: to record as many bird species as possible in 48 hours. We will be in friendly competition with the best birding counties in Britain, so every species will count.
We’ll scour the rugged cliffs of the Lizard and West Penwith, where we hope to encounter the unmistakable call and acrobatic flight of Cornwall’s iconic Chough. These charismatic birds, now thriving after decades of absence, are among the highlights of the county. They share their clifftop realm with Ravens and Peregrines, while auks, Gannets and Kittiwakes dwell in the swell offshore.
At the Hayle Estuary, one of south-west England’s premier wintering sites, we’ll seek out large flocks of wildfowl and grill the huge gull flocks to find the scarce species that often winter here. In the shadow of St Michael’s Mount, we’ll scour the beach for wintering waders and scan the bay for divers, grebes and wintering seaducks, with the chance of Purple Sandpipers or even a lingering skua.
With friendly competition, sweeping seascapes and the ever-present chance of a rarity blown in on Atlantic winds, this bird race promises a perfect mix of excitement, challenge and West Country charm. Wrap up warm and join us for Cornwall’s midwinter birding adventure!
