Summary
Tajikistan, a landlocked country in central Asia, is defined by its dramatic mountainous landscape. Over 90% of the country is covered by towering peaks, making it one of the most elevated nations in the world. Its rugged geography is shaped by the convergence of several major mountain ranges, including the Pamir, Alay and Tien Shan. Among these, the Pamir Mountains, often referred to as the 'Roof of the World', dominate the south-eastern region and are renowned for their breathtaking high-altitude terrain.
The diverse geography of Tajikistan, ranging from alpine meadows to desert plains, supports a rich variety of wildlife. In the Pamirs, Snow Leopards roam the remote peaks, preying on ibex, Markhor and Marco Polo Argali, the latter being an iconic species endemic to the region. Brown Bear, Eurasian Lynx and Grey Wolf also inhabit these rugged landscapes. The variation in habitat caused by large altitudinal ranges also supports a rich and diverse birdlife, with likely sightings of soaring Himalayan Griffon Vultures, smart Güldenstädt’s Redstarts, and sought-after Tibetan Sandgrouse. Tajikistan's flora is equally impressive, with juniper forests, alpine pastures and wildflowers blanketing the lower slopes. In spring, these areas burst into vibrant colour, contrasting with the stark, snow-covered peaks. The unique geography and wildlife of Tajikistan, particularly the Pamir Mountains, make the region a vital ecological and cultural treasure.

Our journey, which takes place in late autumn, begins in the vibrant capital, Dushanbe. Here, we will take time to acclimatise and take in a little of the country's history, culture and cuisine before embarking on a breathtaking drive along the country’s southern border. Our journey begins early as we travel south-east along the scenic Afghanistan border en route to Shuroobod, with picturesque stops showcasing the stunning landscapes as we climb through the lower slopes of the Pamir range. We will spend two nights at a comfortable lodge, from which we undertake our quest to find the elusive and rare Markhor in its rugged habitat. This impressive screw-horned mountain goat inhabits scrub forests of pine, juniper and oak with a distribution in the far western Himalaya and Pamir ranges. Birders will be entertained by mountain species such as Lammergeier, Streaked Laughingthrush and Wallcreeper, while Little Forktail may be found along the river. A hike in the nearby valleys reveals more treasures, including Himalayan Griffon Vultures and Brown Dippers.
Our adventure continues to Ravmed, where we will head out early with telescopes in the hope of observing Pamir Ibex in their dramatic, mountainous surroundings. The air should be clear, and towering snow-capped peaks will be in view as we seek the ibex. In the afternoon, we will journey to Khorog and visit the renowned Khorog Botanical Garden, where we might catch sight of the stunning and sought-after Yellow-breasted Azure Tit, as well as Red-fronted Serin and wintering Black-throated Thrush among the region's diverse plant-life.
Next, we move to Alichur, where our focus shifts to high-altitude wildlife, particularly the Marco Polo Argali, with the exciting chance of encountering Himalayan Snowcock, Tibetan Sandgrouse, Great Rosefinch, and possibly Snow Pigeon on the surrounding slopes, all to the backdrop of snow-capped mountains and rugged rocky slopes.
After descending back down to around 2,100 metres, we will have time to relax in Khorog before continuing our tour with a long drive to Kalai-Khumb, where we will dedicate a full day to birding in this scenic region. Along the river, we will search for the striking Plumbeous Water-redstart, often seen alongside the common but charming Brown Dipper. With Tajikistan still rarely explored by visiting naturalists, this tour presents a tantalising opportunity to uncover a few unexpected, exhilarating discoveries.
Journeying back towards Dushanbe through picturesque valleys and passes, we will search for Pine Bunting and Long-legged Buzzard. Stops at water impounds and parks offer final opportunities for birdwatching before returning to Dushanbe for a farewell dinner and time to reflect on a tour filled with exciting wildlife encounters amidst spectacular scenery.
