Summary
Ecuador has long been one of Naturetrek's most popular destinations for birdwatching, but it is also emerging as one of the finest places in the world to observe and photograph the elusive Spectacled (Andean) Bear. This exciting wildlife photography holiday combines several days at Bear Canyon, a pioneering conservation project in the northern Andes, with visits to some of the richest cloudforests in South America. Supported by experienced local trackers and conservationists, we will enjoy exceptional opportunities to observe and photograph Spectacled Bears in their natural habitat, whilst also experiencing the magnificent scenery of Ecuador's mountain landscapes.
From the Andes we descend into the extraordinary Chocó cloudforests, one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth and a paradise for bird photographers. Here we will explore a range of reserves and feeding stations that attract a dazzling variety of hummingbirds, tanagers, toucans, antpittas and other Neotropical specialities. Highlights may include Sword-billed Hummingbird, Toucan Barbet, Plate-billed Mountain Toucan, Black-breasted Puffleg and the spectacular Andean Cock-of-the-rock. Combining exceptional Spectacled Bear encounters with some of the finest bird photography opportunities in South America, this tour offers a unique exploration of Ecuador's remarkable wildlife and conservation success stories.
