Summary
Join Blue Shark and snorkelling experts on a privately chartered vessel as we head for the Celtic Deep (roughly 35 miles off the Pembrokeshire coastline) to observe (either from deck or snorkelling) the magnificent Blue Shark. As we progress on our journey out to 'The Deep', we can expect to encounter Manx Shearwaters, Storm Petrels and other seabirds, and possibly Bottlenose and Short-beaked Common Dolphins as they bow-ride. With some luck, Minke Whale is also possible. Upon arriving at our location, we shall attract the sharks to the vessel using a block of frozen fish and oil "chum" and we will then wait and hope to encounter our first Blue Sharks as they emerge from the depths. These sharks are constantly on the move and we need patience and luck for a shark to smell the chum and come to the boat. Those who wish to have a once-in-a-lifetime view can then go snorkelling with these gentle and majestic creatures – surely one of the UK's top wildlife encounters! Excellent views can also be obtained from the deck. Either way, this is bound to be a superb wildlife encounter. At all times, while on deck and in the water, we will be led by and under the supervision of expert guides.
The meeting point will be at Milford Haven and we shall meet at 7am for a 7.30am departure. The exact meeting point is detailed once booked. We expect to arrive back at around 6.30pm. Wetsuit, snorkel, mask and fins are not included but can be rented (please contact for pricing and costs to be paid by cash only on the day). The train station is a short distance from the port and free parking is available just 25m from the boat. Our vessel is a BW Seacat SPEED 11, which has a toilet on board, seating and a cover (a photo can be viewed in the gallery below). You will need to bring your own lunch and snack for the day, but hot drinks and biscuits are provided.
All participants must be medically fit. If you wish to enter the water you will be expected to be comfortable and competent in the water. That being said, there is no pressure to enter the water and, in fact, some of the best views can be obtained from the boat. If you do enter the water, you will have the assistance and guidance of expert leaders who have many years of experience and there is a rope attached to a life ring to hold onto for support. You do not need to swim far to see the sharks as they often come very close to the boat in a calm and inquisitive manner. You will be essentially floating with them rather than swimming. There are steps to get in and out of the water. You will be many miles offshore with the potential for the water to be choppy. Seasickness tablets are advisable if you are susceptible to motion sickness.
Dates for this trip will often be advertised at fairly short notice when sea conditions look favourable. If you register your interest you will be informed when a date is added. Please register your Interest by calling 01962 733051 or by emailing tom@naturetrek.co.uk
Please do not book non-refundable accommodation as we do rely on the sea conditions to allow us to operate this day, meaning rescheduling and cancellation is quite possible.
