The highlight for me was seeing the Egyptian Plover. The amazing bird 295 bird count of which 104 were lifers. Tour leader Brian was amazing, incredibly knowledgeable and very organised.

Summary
The colourful birdlife of West Africa is perfectly represented in the tiny Republic of The Gambia. As on many conventional sunshine holidays, this birdwatching tour begins at a beach hotel near the capital, Banjul. However, after introductory birdwatching in the surrounding areas, we head by road and boat along the Gambia River, stopping at conveniently located camps to facilitate exploration of the riverine forests and swamps. Egyptian Plover is just one of the highlights of this excursion but the long bird list for the holiday will include a staggering variety of African species augmented by Paleactic migrants in their winter quarters. This tour can either be 11 or 12 days - please check the individual departure dates.
- Great introduction to African birds plus Palearctic migrants: West African birding at its best!
- Travel upriver to search for Egyptian Plover
- Glimpses of Gambian village life
- Direct flights, no time difference and tropical winter sunshine!
The tiny West African republic of The Gambia is widely recognised as an ideal country in which to gain an introduction to the diverse and colourful birdlife of the African continent, as evidenced by the increasing numbers of European birdwatchers taking advantage of The Gambia's unique accessibility. There is a friendly, easy going atmosphere in the country and a happy combination of superlative birdwatching and a warm sunny climate make it an ideal holiday destination. We begin this exciting tour at an hotel on the palm-fringed Atlantic coast then travel along the length of the Gambia River, stopping at strategically situated camps along the way to sample the changing birdlife at each locality. The range of potential species includes huge Goliath Herons, Pink-backed Pelicans and other waterbirds, a splendid variety of raptors and such typically African beauties as Red-throated and Carmine Bee-Eaters. One of the highlights of any tour to The Gambia is the handsome Egyptian Plover and we will be hoping to see this confiding wader near the Senegal border before beginning our return journey to Banjul. With much of West Africa either in political turmoil or very expensive to visit, The Gambia remains an astonishing bargain for travellers and although many holiday-makers seek no more than the guaranteed winter sunshine, the more intrepid will find many examples of fascinating African culture in the rural heart of the country, where the latest European fashions and music have little part to play in the daily life of the villages.
There is arguably no better place than The Gambia to dip your toes into the rich pool of African bird diversity — and, indeed, into tropical Africa itself. The hotel gardens are awash with a myriad of colourful birds, whilst away from the resorts that line the coast, the forests, mangroves, rivers and grasslands are home to a suite of iconic African species, including Egyptian Plover, African Finfoot and Northern Carmine Bee-eater. From the swaying palm trees to the 'characterful' roads used by every conceivable type of transport to the vibrant mass of humanity imbued with an inherent friendliness. The Gambia is quintessentially African and offers a wonderful introduction to the continent's abundant wildlife and vibrant culture.
We begin our holiday with a flight to Banjul and three nights on The Gambia's Atlantic coastline. During breakfast we can admire our hotel's wonderful variety of garden birds including dazzling sunbirds, glossy starlings, rollers, the beautiful Yellow-crowned Gonolek and finch-like birds, such as the pastel-blue Red-cheeked Cordonbleu. Although it will be hard to tear ourselves away, the beaches, creeks and lagoons along the coast offer yet more avian delights and here we can enjoy an abundance of herons, egrets, gulls, terns and waders. Among them are such species as Senegal Thick-knee and both Spur-winged and Wattled Lapwings, plus Grey-headed and Slender-billed Gulls and Osprey.
The Gambia's coastal belt is clothed in an impressive mix of habitats, such as scrub, dry woodland and evergreen forest, home to an impressive range of doves, shrikes, gamebirds, warblers, weavers, bulbuls and other classic African bird families. During our time here we will include a visit to sections of gallery forest where Violet and Green Turacos live, alongside such gems as Western Bluebill, Bearded Barbet and Red-bellied Paradise Flycatcher, Blue-bellied Roller and Red-necked Falcon are possible too.
Next, we will begin an exciting adventure up the Gambia River on a 6-day odyssey into the very heart of the country, a journey that will take us to within a few miles of its easternmost border with Senegal. On the first day, we head east as far as Tendaba Camp for an overnight stay, stopping along the way at, for example, Kampanti or Brumen Bridges, reliable sites for raptors including Lanner Falcon, Grasshopper Buzzard, Beaudouin's and Brown Snake Eagles, or even a Bateleur or Martial Eagle, classic African predators. At Tendaba Camp itself we will take a boat trip through the mangroves in search of such birds as African Finfoot, White-backed Night Heron, African Blue Flycatcher and Mangrove Sunbird.

In all respects, the holiday was excellent, and I would like to particularly mention the excellent leadership provided by Chris and Sering.
D.C. Hertfordshire -
The leaders were exceptional. They combined and complimented each other brilliantly. Both worked flat out in the field for 10-12 hours daily to ensure that all clients saw as much as possible, noting which birds each person had missed to ensure they had first chance next time.
W.S. Berkshire -
I saw about 270 species, of which almost half were lifetime firsts. The headline of the holiday was the first ever recorded sighting in the Gambia of a Hairy-breasted Barbet, unequivocally captured on film by way of verification. I thoroughly enjoyed the trip, and thought it very successful and good value for money.
M.R. Hampshire -
It was a superb holiday and a great adventure.
J.H. Surrey -
Well done for organizing a birdwatching tour that was all birds!
J.B. Hertfordshire -
The success of the trip absolutely depended on Mamadou, who was outstanding in every way. Transport and driver also excellent.
J.H. Edinburgh -
I thoroughly enjoyed the Gambia trip and would particularly like to express my thanks to our guide, Mamadou, who was excellent at finding and identifying the birds and ensuring that we all had good views.
C.K. West Yorkshire -
We got great views of many birds particularly the target species. I was very happy with the birds we saw.

Tour Leader: Philip Thompson
Philip was born in Nigeria and feels sure that at a subconscious level this has instilled in him his lifelong passion and interest in the natural world and the wildlife of Africa in particular. He was born of a generation who, as kids, would think nothing of disappearing of into the surrounding woods and countryside only to return at the end of the day hungry and tired. This enjoyment in the open country and experiencing at first hand the natural world has remained with him to this day and it is now his great pleasure to show and share with others the natural delights that drew him to tour leading. His main interest is in wild flowers but he remains a keen and able birder with an interest in all other forms of the natural environment. He is also interested in music, fashion and film, with European cinema a particular favourite.

Tour Leader: Marcus John
Marcus developed a passion for wildlife during his childhood spent in rural Somerset. He was never without ‘The Observer’s Book of Birds’ and spent all his free time walking and cycling in the countryside between Wells and Cheddar. His obsession with birds soon extended to mammals and insects, as well as wildlife photography. Over the years, he has participated in various surveys for Natural Resources Wales and the BTO. He has also led walks and presented talks at RPSB events in Wales and England and is an active member of the Gwent Ornithological Society.
After graduating from Bristol University, he started a family and embarked on a career in education – but he never missed an opportunity to travel! Over the past thirty years, he has sought out wildlife across Europe, Africa, Asia, North America and the Caribbean, and has been leading Naturetrek tours since 2011.
Ten years ago, he established our first tours to Ardnamurchan, and he has returned to lead in the Scottish Highlands every year since. He has subsequently taken Naturetrek groups to many European destinations, his favourites being Iceland and the Camargue. With a life-long interest in Africa, he has relished opportunities to lead tours in Ethiopia, Tanzania and The Gambia, and also has some expertise in Caribbean wildlife, having guided groups to both Jamaica and Trinidad.
Marcus has developed a strong reputation as a naturalist guide and his approachability, friendly advice and sense of humour are always appreciated by our clients!
