Summary
The small Central American country of Costa Rica may only cover 0.1% of the Earth’s surface but is home to 5% of our planet’s biodiversity! To date nearly 950 species of bird have been recorded here, more than in the whole of the US and Canada combined! This abundance of birdlife includes 53 species of hummingbirds, those dazzlingly-coloured avian sprites who zip around the forests and mountains of the Americas from Patagonia to Alaska. This 16-day tour visits some of Costa Rica’s very best wildlife havens and goes in search of the country’s abundant birdlife, with a particular focus on its hummingbirds. We will visit the Talamanca Mountains (a hummingbird hotspot) in search of the beautiful Resplendent Quetzal, the wetlands of Cano Negro and the untouched rainforests of La Selva. Beneath the volcanic cone of Arenal we will look for the tiny Green Thorntail hummingbird and the turkey-sized Great Curassow, whilst in the moss-draped forests of Bosque de Paz Purple-throated Mountain-gems and Violet Sabrewings zip from flower to flower. There will be an abundance of other wildlife to enjoy too, from lethargic Three-toed Sloths to the toxic Strawberry Poison-dart Frogs.
