Summary
South-east China is one of Asia's most exciting yet least-visited birding destinations. During the winter months, the region's forests, wetlands and mountain valleys host an impressive concentration of resident birds and winter visitors, making it an outstanding time to explore this remarkably diverse corner of the Palearctic.
Our tour focuses on a superb range of habitats, from subtropical evergreen forests and bamboo-covered hillsides to rivers, lakes and agricultural landscapes. Among the highlights are some of China's most sought-after birds, including the Critically Endangered Baer's Pochard, the elegant Scaly-sided Merganser, and wintering flocks of the iconic Siberian Crane, one of the world's rarest crane species. In the forested uplands, we hope to find the spectacular Cabot's Tragopan, along with a rich supporting cast of laughingthrushes, fulvettas, parrotbills, babblers and a variety of wintering passerines.
Winter birding in south-east China can be exceptionally productive. Mixed feeding flocks often provide close views of a remarkable variety of species, whilst wetlands attract a wealth of ducks, geese, herons and other waterbirds. Combined with generally mild temperatures, attractive scenery and excellent local hospitality, the result is a relaxed yet highly rewarding birdwatching experience.
Away from the birding, traditional villages, terraced hillsides and ancient forests provide a fascinating glimpse into a region where culture and nature remain closely intertwined. Combining globally important species, outstanding bird diversity and some of China's most beautiful landscapes, this tour offers an unforgettable introduction to one of Asia's premier winter birding destinations.
