An ecological researcher by training, Glen carried out his PhD on Corncrake and Grassland Management before working for the RSPB Conservation Science department for nearly 20 years, undertaking studies into several iconic UK breeding bird species such as Stone Curlew, Capercaillie, Black Grouse and Great Bittern. He also led studies on lowland wet grassland waders and predator impacts.

After leaving the RSPB, he moved to Shetland, where he has now lived for more than 25 years with his wife, raising their family while running a croft, serving as a firefighter and coastguard, and taking part in international research projects across Europe, the Middle East, Kazakhstan and West Africa. He later joined NatureScot, the Scottish Government's nature agency, initially as a Protected Sites Officer before becoming the officer for South Shetland and National Nature Reserve (NNR) Manager, before serving as NatureScot's Marine Ornithology Adviser.

Most recently, he has been employed as a Principal Consultant for a private consultancy, a tour guide and a surveyor. As a licenced ringer, he is a member of the Shetland Ringing Group and also one of the team that contribute to the Shetland Bird report. His interests are not limited to birds however, he is a keen moth recorder, flower hunter and will search from the seashore to the hill-tops for interesting flora and fauna! Finally, Glen is a director of Fair Isle Bird Observatory and has been a regular visitor to the magical island ever since first working there as a seabird monitor more than 40 years ago.
