Dougal Gillman

Raised in the Whitsunday Islands of north Queensland, Dougal grew up surrounded by rainforest and reef. Much of his childhood was spent outdoors exploring the bush, where an early fascination with anything that slithered, scuttled or croaked soon took hold. That curiosity gradually grew into a wider interest in Australia’s natural history and the diverse ecosystems of the tropics. Along the way he became both a bushman and a scuba diver, spending long periods in the landscapes and waters of the Great Barrier Reef region and northern Australia. Years in the field have given him a strong feel for these environments, from coastal reefs and rainforest to savanna and wetlands. Dougal later trained as a horticulturist, which deepened his interest in Australia’s plant life and the ways landscapes shape the animals that live within them. He has a broad interest in wildlife and enjoys helping people appreciate the full diversity of Australia’s fauna and flora. Now travelling around Australia with his wife in their caravan, Dougal documents the country’s wildlife through photography and film. Friendly and easy-going, he enjoys sharing his knowledge and helping others experience Australia’s wildlife first-hand.
