Life Before Naturetrek

Laura grew up with a huge interest in the natural world and spent some years in Scotland, running around the fields and rivers looking for wildlife – especially frogs, toads and Adders. As an adult she gained a BSc in Marine Biology and an MSc in Applied Zoo Biology. She then began work as Animal Keeper at Marwell Zoo, looking after species ranging from ostrich, Marabou Stork, Humboldt Penguins, Blue-faced Honeyeaters, Burmese Mountain Tortoise and Egyptian Uromastyx. She also was involved in the release of native Sand Lizards in Dorset. Her career then focused on aquatic life, where she was responsible for looking after freshwater, tropical and marine systems, including coral husbandry and aquaculture systems.

Laura has travelled to many places, the most memorable being to Cape Verde’s islands of Sal and Boa Vista. During these visits, she was delighted to visit conservation teams protecting nesting Loggerhead Turtles, seeing females nesting and laying their eggs, and snorkelling with Lemon Sharks. She now feels these islands will always have a piece of her heart! Laura has also recently enjoyed visiting Germany, France, Denmark, Poland, Belgium and the Dominican Republic – usually with a pair of binoculars in hand!
