Life Before Naturetrek
Growing up on the shores of the Exe Estuary in Devon, Euan has always been surrounded by wildlife. Bird watching, rock pooling, wildlife photography and snorkelling in this region's multitude of ecosystems ultimately nurtured Euan’s love of nature into a career path. Studying a BSc in Countryside and Environmental Management at Harper Adams University, he gained a strong foundation in ecology and environmental science, going onto to complete an MSc in Applied Ecology and Conservation at the University of East Anglia, specialising in ornithology for both degrees.
Post studies, Euan spent two years in ecological consultancy, working across the Scottish uplands and the Norfolk Broads, where his day-to-day work consisted of undertaking surveys across a wide range of taxanomic groups, in addition to habitat classification and condition work. He is qualified in 4x4 off-road driving, tractor driving and the flying of drones, and is also an associate member of the Chartered Institute of Ecology and Environmental Management.
Travel has been a key part of Euan’s life, having explored the wildlife of many countries including Germany, Greece, USA, Croatia, Montenegro and Iceland, and having conducted self-guided wildlife expeditions to Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Mexico and New Zealand. He has also spent time in remote areas of China, Egypt and South Africa, experiences that have equipped him with a deep appreciation for global biodiversity and human culture.
Away from work, Euan enjoys playing the drums having played in numerous bands. He is also a very keen hiker and mountain climber, having completed hiking challenges across Britain, as well as summiting Scafell Pike, Snowdon, Mount Keen, Pen-y-fan and Mount Berembun.
