Naturetrek provided a good winter break bird watching in Kent in February 2022 taking in several good birdwatching sites on a four day break. A good variety of birds were found thankfully the weather was kind and so enabled some enjoyable visits in the field. A great, although somewhat quirky hotel in the Marquis of Granby, however the food was good and the attentive and friendly staff made it an overall enjoyable experience. Our local RSPB group have used Naturetrek a few times now and we have always found them competitively priced for their short breaks and offer expertise in the field of bird watching.

Summary
Kent is a fantastic county for wildlife, with arguably the winter months being the most spectacular with a staggering number of ducks, geese, waders and birds of prey on offer! This 5-day holiday will encompass as many habitats as possible, including gravel pits, saltmarsh, woodland and reedbed to increase our chances of finding as much wildlife as we can. With our hotel perfectly situated close to Dover, we are in striking distance of the very best reserves in the county, including those in the Stour Valley, North Kent Downs and Marshes and Dungeness! All of these excellent areas are dominated by the presence of raptors, especially Marsh Harriers which are very much in abundance, whilst Hen Harrier, Merlin, Short-eared Owl, Peregrine Falcon, and possibly Rough-legged Buzzard are all potential birds we may find. Other desirable species, including Bearded Tits and Great White Egrets, are also well established now and wintering birds on the extensive gravel pits of Dungeness may produce Black-necked and Slavonian Grebes, Bewick's Swans and a plethora of ducks.
Although the special birdlife will be the main focus of this holiday, our all-round naturalist tour leader will be keen to point out any interesting flora or mammals we may encounter.
- Myriad birds of prey with a possibility of Hen Harrier, Short-eared Owl and even Rough-legged Buzzard
- Thousands of wintering ducks on the marshes and gravel pits
- Possibility of Bewick's Swans and White-fronted Geese
- Visiting the exceptional birding site of Dungeness
- Bearded Tits and Great White Egrets
- Led by an expert all-round naturalist
Grading
Grade A. Walks on this holiday will be taken at a slow birdwatching pace, though there will be the occasional long walk, though generally on flat ground. Wellies are recommended for a few of the walks.
