Summary

Join naturalist Martin Pitt in search of dragonflies and other wildlife in the lowland bogs of the New Forest. These acid streams hold one of the remaining populations of Southern Damselflies in the UK, and joining them is an unparalleled mix of hawkers, skimmers and darters amongst the heather-strewn heaths and bogs of the southern part of the New Forest National Park. We will concentrate on three locations to find not only our target odonata but also a supporting cast of butterflies, including Silver Studded Blue and Grayling, and maybe the rare and unassuming Bog Orchid, a sphagnum specialist found in the same area. We expect to walk up to 5 miles over the course of the day, using our cars occasionally to move between sites.

  • Explore habitat home to one of the UK's remaining Southern Damselfly populations
  • Search for hawkers, skimmers and darters
