A day trip to the Norfolk area of Breckland which included a visit to Lynford Arboretum and a wander along the Little Ouse with an expert guide. We saw many rare plant species, some endemic to the Brecks, woodland birds and ducks, butterflies. It was a very small group so we felt completely safe and were able to ask questions of our knowledgeable guide, Mike. Very interesting and varied and good value for money.

Summary
The Brecks of East Anglia offer British naturalists their only piece of continental climate, where relatively cold winters and hot summers conspire to create a wonderful habitat of thin sands over chalk and all sculpted by the forces of glaciers and wind-blown sands. We’ll begin with a visit to a couple of the finest grass heath reserves, where careful management provides ideal habitat for specialities such as Spanish Catchfly, Bur Medick, Shepherd’s Cress and Purple Milk-vetch. We will then visit other sites according to season to look for other Breckland speciality plants such as Spring, Fingered and Breckland Speedwells and the endemic Perennial Knawel. In addition, a nice suite of birds can be found in the area including Stone-curlew, Firecrest and Woodlark, while a check of the Little Ouse River may produce anything from Kingfisher to Mandarin Duck and perhaps even an Otter if we’re very lucky! Photographic opportunities will be plentiful.
Meet in good time for a 9.00am start at Cranwich Heath car park, west of Mundford. After a good exploration of the site, we will visit other sites nearby, before transferring to our lunch site near Santon Downham. Walks will be typically short, a matter of a few hundred metres at each site.

This was a day trip to explore the unique habitat of the Breckland. With any wildlife tour nothing can be guaranteed so a lot depends on the guide and of the location of sites visited. This tour had it all - a very knowledgeable guide, who was able to communicate vey well and was easy to chat to. A wide variety of habitats were visited, each with it's own interest. A very enjoyable, productive day. Naturetrek are unfailingly so very helpful, polite and efficient. Good communication and a huge variety of choice of holidays and day trips. The knowledge shown by their guides is just a thing of wonder and excellence. When on tours with this company the accommodation has always been very good. Really can't fault them or offer any comments as to how the experiences can be improved.

Mixed natural history - birds, flowers, trees, grasses, water voles and butterflies. Late Spring meant many of the flowers were not open, but the leader found the plants for us (some of them very tiny!) and explained the unique geology and climate of the Brecks and its impact on the natural history there. Lovely day out after months of lockdown.
