Summary
Much of eastern England lies on a bedrock of chalk, providing a wonderful array of chalk grassland and similar habitats to visit. However, the peaty bogs and mires of western and northern Britain are a scarce commodity here, so this trip offers a chance to visit some species-rich, acid bogs without the need to travel too far! The sites we shall visit are all well known for their array of interesting wildlife, especially bog plants and insects. Dersingham Bog and Roydon Common form the bulk of a narrow belt of acidic bogs in west Norfolk that are home to such local rarities as Bog Asphodel, Cranberry and no less than three different species of carnivorous sundew plants. In addition, Black Darter and Keeled Skimmer dragonflies have their only East Anglian sites here and fly among a wide array of other dragonfly and damselfly species. Both locations can provide sightings of Woodlark, Stonechat and other heathland birds, while nearby woods can often attract flocks of Common Crossbills.
- Wide, sweeping landscapes across heath and bog
- Three species of carnivorous sundew
- Black Darter dragonflies
- A rich suite of wetland and heathland plants
- Woodlarks, Stonechats and Crossbills
