The trip leaders Simon and Niki were both superb naturalists. Their identification skills were quite simply first class. They were able to convey their knowledge and enthusiasm very effectively. The highlight of the holiday for me was to see the migration of Griffon Vultures, a real natural history spectacle. A great added bonus was to see a number of Northern Bald Ibis. Staying at two centres, one in the mountains and one near the coast, allowed us to see a much wider range of birds. This was a truly memorable and impressive trip, greatly recommended.

Summary
The natural parks of Sierra de las Nieves and the Sierra de Grazalema to the east and west of Ronda are home to some of the densest raptor populations in Europe and in late autumn the resident raptors are briefly joined by migrants passing en route to the Strait of Gibraltar. We’ll enjoy the raptors of this region as well as other montane and forest birdlife such as Black Wheatear, Blue Rock Thrush and Rock Bunting before transferring to our second base, Cortijo el Indiviso. Every year millions of birds make the journey across the Strait between Europe and Africa, and our visit is timed to coincide with the peak of the Griffon Vulture passage when as many as 2,300 birds have been recorded crossing the Strait during a one-hour period! The seabird migration is also spectacular at this time of year and we will be able to watch hundreds of Balearic and Cory´s Shearwaters move between the Atlantic and the Mediterranean.
- 2-centre tour based in the mountains of the Serranía de Ronda and the Strait of Gibraltar
- Experience the spectacle of mass avian migration as thousands of Griffon Vultures cross the Strait

- Look out for the characterful but highly endangered Northern Bald Ibis
- Explore the historic city of Ronda
- Led by expert naturalist guide

Easy day walks only.Situated 100 kilometres west of Málaga, the city of Ronda perches high above the El Tajo canyon, one of Europe's most spectacular ravines. The beauty of its situation — surrounded by lush river valleys and impressive mountain ranges — has attracted artists and travellers for centuries. First settled by Celts in the 6th century, the region then fell under the rule of a succession of invading armies including the Romans, Visigoths and Moors. Napoleon's army swept through in the 19th century and the area suffered greatly during the Spanish Civil War. Happily, peace now reigns, and with over 2,000 species of plant recorded (including several endemics), the area is important botanically within an Iberian and European context. The region's birdlife is equally interesting. To the east and west respectively lie the Sierra de las Nieves and the Sierra de Grazalema. These mountain ranges have been designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserves and are home to two of the densest raptor populations in Europe. During late autumn, the resident raptors are briefly joined by a variety of other birds passing south between the sierras, en route to the Strait of Gibraltar. The Strait itself, just 14 kilometres wide at its narrowest point, is the focus, twice-yearly, for one of the world’s most impressive bird migrations. Every year, millions of birds make the journey across the Strait between Europe and Africa, making use of uplifts and thermals which swirl around the Rock of Gibraltar. Although we hope to see a wide variety of species during our time here, our visit is timed to coincide with the peak of the Griffon Vulture passage when as many as 2,300 birds have been recorded crossing the Strait during a one-hour period!
We begin with a flight to Málaga and from there drive west to Juzcar, near historic Ronda, our base for two nights. En route we may encounter such species as Ring Ouzel, Alpine Accentor, Fieldfare and Redwing. Griffon and Egyptian Vultures are present around Ronda, and the four species of eagle that breed in the area can also be encountered at this time of the year: Bonelli’s, Short-toed, Booted and Golden. We will explore the region’s hills in search of Blue Rock Thrush, Rock Bunting and European Eagle Owl, whilst woodland habitats should yield Crested Tit, Short-toed Treecreeper, Hawfinch and Firecrest. A visit to a nearby vulture feeding station will provide a chance to see congregations of feeding Griffon and Egyptian Vultures. To witness hundreds of these huge, majestic birds as they glide in, lured by the scent of meat, and then settle at very close quarters to their audience, is a truly unforgettable experience. During our stay we will also find time to explore the city of Ronda itself which retains much of its historic charm, particularly the 'old town'. From the 18th century Puente Nuevo which straddles the 100-metre drop to the river below, we will gain unparalleled views out over the Serranía de Ronda mountains as well as have an opportunity to encounter any of the specialities of the area not yet seen.
Next we transfer to Cortijo el Indiviso, an ideal spot for watching the migration in, being located between two natural parks in the hills above the Strait of Gibraltar. From here, the imposing silhouette of Morocco may be seen in the distance and we should witness a wide variety of migratory birds making the journey south to Africa across the Strait, including Egyptian Vultures, Short-toed and Booted Eagles, Black Kites and storks. The vulture migration is particularly spectacular, and we will visit several of the key raptor watchpoints situated along the coast. With up to 4,000 Griffon Vultures making the crossing in a single day, this represents the Palearctic’s largest congregation of this declining species, a world-class natural wonder only possible over the Strait of Gibraltar! We will also explore the wetlands and intertidal areas in the Strait in search of the wintering and passage waders, terns, gulls and egrets which are found here in huge numbers at this time of year. The critically endangered Northern Bald Ibis has now increased in numbers due to a very successful reintroduction programme and we will visit a private reserve to see this charismatic bird.
All too soon it will be time to leave the mild climate and bird-filled skies of south-west Spain and head to Málaga airport for our flight home.

Simon and Niki were brilliant leaders, with in-depth knowledge about the area and its history, as well as phenomenal expertise in natural history. They had endless patience, a great sense of humour, and made sure that everyone saw everything they wanted to. They shared their passion and love for the area and its majestic avian inhabitants. The scenery and wildlife were just superb. This was my third trip with Naturetrek and the best yet! A big thank you to the whole team who work behind the scenes, and ensure that everything runs smoothly.

A very enjoyable trip, timed to coincide with the migration of thousands of vultures, storks and other raptors across the Straits of Gibraltar. Staying in two locations - a rural hotel in the Ronda mountains and an eco lodge near Tarifa - we visited a number of wetland and coastal sites where migrating birds stop to refuel before making the hazardous trip further south into Africa. A rare opportunity to see huge concentrations of birds as they funnel down into this small area of Spain from all over Western Europe. One of nature’s true spectacles.

Tour Leader: Simon Tonkin
Simon was raised in Plymouth and his early birding habitats were rubbish tips, sewage outfalls and fish factories. It all started when, at nine years old, his enthralment with the natural world led him to sneak out with his father's massive binoculars at first light, returning home many hours after dark covered in estuarine mud and other indescribable detritus, to face the music! Fulfilling a boyhood dream, Simon worked for the RSPB full-time for fifteen years; the first projects he was involved in were to protect breeding Hen Harriers and Bee-eaters in the North of England. Simon has lectured in ornithology, specialising in a variety of subjects including bird ethology, migration and bird populations. He has worked in farmland bird conservation for the most of his RSPB career and recently worked at the RSPB's headquarters in Sandy. Simon has conducted research on Corn Bunting crop nest site selection and on the seed palatability of farmland granivores. He also co-launched Operation Turtle Dove, co-ordinating efforts in the UK and internationally to save the species from extirpation. Simon has worked as the Conservation Manager for Conservation Grade, working on ground-breaking and exciting conservation projects in Spain, Portugal, Central America, Morocco, Senegal and the Gambia and is widely travelled in these countries, being particularly familiar with their avifauna, lepidoptera and mammalian species. Simon now lives in the epi-centre of migration in Southern Spain, near Tarifa, working on a variety of conservation projects, and tour leading throughout the year for Naturetrek.
