Summary
Join naturalist and presenter, Dan Rouse, as we explore a range of habitats ranging from dunes, woodlands and the Kenfig Pool on this spectacular coastal SSSI reserve in south Wales. Kenfig is a fantastic location for a variety of butterflies, migrant birds and its famous Fen Orchids. The morning will be spent in and around the Kenfig Pool area where we will use the hide to look for dragonflies, waterfowl and Kingfishers on the pool itself; this pool can turn up some interesting species, as well as Otters and Grass Snakes. After our visit to the hide, we will explore the dunes for singing migrant birds such as Lesser Whitethroat, Skylark, Garden Warblers and anything interesting – the reserve has seen such rarities as Red-rumped Swallow, Spotted Crake and European Bee-eater in recent years!
The dunes are vitally important for many species which depend on this rare habitat. Butterflies include Small Blue, Small White, Peacock and Dark Green Fritillary, and the reserve and dunes have also turned up species such as Long-tailed Blue and the rare Lesser Emperor Dragonfly. It’s not only fantastic for insects, but also the beauty of the orchids is a sight to behold! We will explore the dunes and head to a good location for Fen Orchid, Marsh Helleborine, Fragrant Orchid, Southern Marsh Orchid and many more.
We will enjoy a long walk of around 6 miles with a lunch stop.
- Migrant passerines may include Whinchats, Lesser Whitethroats and some scarcer species (April/May dates)
- This SSSI has significant importance for one of the UK's rarest orchids - the Fen Orchid (June/July dates)
- Marsh Helleborines, Early Marsh Orchids and Fragrant Orchids dominate the sand dunes in June
- Kenfig Pool hosts many species of dragonfly
- Learn about the area and habitats from local expert and naturalist, Dan Rouse
