The Braye Beach Hotel was fabulous! Staff were very friendly and attentive. We loved our room with view of the bay. Food was excellent. Daily refresh of the room was carried out and we particularly liked having fresh milk in the fridge. We also made use of the meeting room and cinema downstairs for completing our daily sightings lists. Cannot fault this hotel at all. We loved using the e-bikes which were great for visiting a number of different sites on the island each day. The tour contained a good variety of different activities - moth trapping, looking for hedgehogs, garden visit on "Open Gardens" day, Victorian forts, Roman ruins, WWII bunkers and fortifications, museum visit, boat trip, as well as plenty of opportunities to look for flora and fauna. Everything was well-organised and ran smoothly. The timing of doing the boat trip at the end of the holiday was great since we sailed around the whole island and were able to see places we had visited from a different viewpoint. We loved everything! Matt was a font of knowledge, able to spot, point out and name not only a vast number of birds but also moths, butterflies, numerous insects and a huge variety of plants. He was also able to tell us about the island and its history. Matt was very focused on making sure that all participants were catered for in terms of both interests and level of participation. He was also excellent at organising the details of the week, reserving tables for meals, sorting out lunch orders, making sure that the e-bikes worked correctly and time-tabling activities. Couldn't ask for a better guide!

Tour Leader: Matthew Scragg
Matt Scragg has been working in conservation since 2006, a former head-keeper in a zoological park, Matt turned his attentions to working in ornithological science for bird observatories in 2017 and he is the current assistant warden at Alderney bird observatory. Prior to arriving in Alderney in March 2021, Matt was most recently working in Sweden where he completed two years as a warden at Landsort Fågelstation, a bird migration hotspot situated in the southern archipelago of Stockholm. He furthered his experience with two years as assistant warden at Languard bird observatory, Suffolk. Whilst birds are his forte, Matt has developed a keen knowledge of invertebrates, particularly moths, butterflies, and dragonflies.
