Brazil's south-eastern state of Minas Gerais is simply spectacular. This exciting itinerary will take us to its most breathtaking and wildlife-rich locations, including the Serra da Canastra and Serra do Cipó National Parks and the famous monastery within the Serra do Caraça Reserve, home of the elusive Maned Wolf. Brazil is the largest country in South America and the fifth largest in the world. It holds over 50% of the Amazon Rainforest, which itself accounts for approximately 10% of all species in the world, and for this reason it is believed to be the most biodiverse country on the planet! At around 55,000, it has the most known number of plant species, with many more being found, around 3,000 fresh water fish species and over 680 mammals with birds standing at 1,900! The current consensus is that there are six distinct biomes across Brazil: Amazon Rainforest, Atlantic Forest, Cerrado (vast tropical Savanah), Caatinga (dry, thorny, desert forest) Pampa (vast grasslands) and the Pantanal (the world's largest tropical wetland).




Many of our holidays focus on, and incorporate, the vast lowlands of the Pantanal which extend southwards from the plateau of the Mato Grosso in Brazil, to the borders with Paraguay and Bolivia. The Pantanal is a seasonally flooded wetland covering over 80,000 square miles, being roughly the size of France and very sparsely populated. Teeming with life, the Pantanal is a naturalist's dream with an amazing diversity of species to enjoy and many of them more accessible here than anywhere else. It is a mosaic of habitats created by waters that flow into it annually from the southern Cerrado. Each wet season, Cerrado rainwater pours down the Cuiaba, Paraguay and Piquiri rivers, and as their levels rise, they flood the Pantanal’s grasslands and gallery forests with nutrient-rich waters. We run our tours at the very best time of year, between June and early November, staying at the right places, for the right amount of time hence maximising our chances of seeing as much of the incredible wildlife here as we can. We begin with a direct overnight flight to São Paulo and then a drive of three and a half hours to spend our first night in Mococa. Here we will enjoy our first Brazilian birds, such as Red-legged Seriema, Swallow-tailed Hummingbird, Blond-crested Woodpecker and Curl-crested Jay. Moving on, we will spend three nights in the dramatic landscapes of the Serra da Canastra National Park, where we will explore the reserve's lowland forests, rivers and high open grasslands. King Vulture, Helmeted Manakin, Streamer-tailed Tyrant and Greater Rhea are just some of the avian delights to be found here. We will also search for the critically endangered Brazilian Merganser (less than 250 birds remain). Our main mammalian target here is the wonderful Giant Anteater, but if luck is on our side, we may find Giant Armadillo and Maned Wolf too! Next, we move into the rugged landscape of Serra do Cipó National Park for a further stay of three nights. Specialities here may include Cipó Cinclodes and Cipó Canastero and two beautiful hummingbirds, the Horned and Hyacinth Visorbearer, together with Grey-backed Tachuri and Pale-throated Sierra Finch, among many others. We will also visit the grasslands and Atlantic Forests on the eastern side of Cipó’s plateau, home to the endemic Rock and Marsh Tapaculos.


We will end our tour with two nights at Santuário do Caraça, the beautiful old monastery within the Serra do Caraça Reserve. This is one of the best places in the world to see the stilt-legged Maned Wolf. This spectacular canid often appears at night at the entrance to the monastery, attracted by the kitchen scraps left out by the monks! Birding at Serra do Caraça will be exciting and varied too, with highlights including Swallow-tailed Cotinga, Blackish Rail and Sapphire-spangled Emerald.

                                    [introduction] => As its name suggests, this is a floating hotel that specialises in Jaguar sightings! It has eight air-conditioned standard rooms and 12 luxury suites, all en suite, and on the Flotel’s expansive top-deck guests may relax in hammocks and enjoy al fresco meals. This is the brain-child of conservation biologist Charles Munn who operates the hotel as both a Jaguar research base and eco-tourism venture. Since 2005 over 70 different Jaguars have been photographed in the vicinity, so it is hardly surprising that this spot is considered the best place to see these large cats in the wild. Sightings of Giant River Otter are good here too, while the large number of bird species present includes Large-billed and Yellow-billed Tern, Black Skimmer and all five of South America’s kingfisher species. As the only accommodation in the centre of the ‘Jaguar Zone’, the Flotel has the significant advantage of being able to respond immediately to Jaguar sightings via a fleet of spotter boats who radio sightings in.

                                    [introduction] => Set deep in the heart of the Amazon Basin, on the banks of the Cristalino River, this lodge is only accessible by boat, giving it an exciting feel. The lodge’s luxurious rooms are all en suite and there is a pleasant restaurant and a floating deck on the river, perfect for a ‘sun-downer’! Guests have the opportunity to view wildlife on foot along 35 kilometres of trails, with species such as Neotropical Otter, Pacha, Brazilian Tapir and Tayra all possible. Several species of monkey may also be seen crashing through the canopy and these include the endemic White-whiskered Spider Monkey, Night Monkey, Dusky Titi Monkey, Brown Capuchin, Red-handed Howler Monkey and the handsome and endemic Red-nosed Bearded Saki. Cristalino really comes into its own for birders, with close to 600 species identified to date! There are a number of sought-after bamboo specialists such as Rufous-capped Nunlet, Manu Antbird and Chestnut-throated Spinetail whilst larger forest birds include Red-throated Piping-guan and Razor-billed and Bare-faced Curassows. The understorey is the niche of antbirds, antwrens, antshrikes, antpittas and manakins, while six species of macaw regularly add a splash of colour overhead. The possibility of Harpy Eagle and Crested Eagle makes the birding here all the more special!

Summary

We begin with a direct overnight flight to São Paulo and then a drive of three and a half hours to spend our first night in Mococa. Here we will enjoy our first Brazilian birds, such as Red-legged Seriema, Swallow-tailed Hummingbird, Blond-crested Woodpecker and Curl-crested Jay. Moving on, we will spend three nights in the dramatic landscapes of the Serra da Canastra National Park, where we will explore the reserve's lowland forests, rivers and high open grasslands. King Vulture, Helmeted Manakin, Streamer-tailed Tyrant and Greater Rhea are just some of the avian delights to be found here. We will also search for the critically endangered Brazilian Merganser (less than 250 birds remain). Our main mammalian target here is the wonderful Giant Anteater, but if luck is on our side, we may find Giant Armadillo and Maned Wolf too! Next, we move into the rugged landscape of Serra do Cipó National Park for a further stay of three nights. Specialities here may include Cipó Cinclodes and Cipó Canastero and two beautiful hummingbirds, the Horned and Hyacinth Visorbearer, together with Grey-backed Tachuri and Pale-throated Sierra Finch, among many others. We will also visit the grasslands and Atlantic Forests on the eastern side of Cipó’s plateau, home to the endemic Rock and Marsh Tapaculos.

We will end our tour with two nights at Santuário do Caraça, the beautiful old monastery within the Serra do Caraça Reserve. This is one of the best places in the world to see the stilt-legged Maned Wolf. This spectacular canid often appears at night at the entrance to the monastery, attracted by the kitchen scraps left out by the monks! Birding at Serra do Caraça will be exciting and varied too, with highlights including Swallow-tailed Cotinga, Blackish Rail and Sapphire-spangled Emerald.
