Summary
Each year, during the summer breeding season, around half a million seabirds return to the white chalk cliffs at Bempton and nearby Flamborough to breed. In partnership with Yorkshire Coast Nature, we have organised exclusive use of boats to witness the feeding frenzies of Gannets up close for the morning, while the afternoon will be spent searching for birds and other wildlife on the cliffs.
The day will start off early at Bridlington Harbour for the 4-hour diving Gannet boat experience. From here we will sail around Flamborough Headland looking for seabird species such as Puffins, Razorbills, Kittiwakes, and Gannets. Grey Seals may be seen basking in the sun along the shoreline. We will also keep an eye out for Bottlenose Dolphins, Harbour Porpoises, and Minke Whales, which have occasionally been spotted in the past. Once we have taken in the sights of Flamborough, we will sail on to Bempton Cliffs for the Gannet spectacle and another chance to see other seabirds. The cliffs are home to the largest mainland gannetry in England from March to October. The Gannets will be encouraged to come a safe distance to the boat with fish, giving us an excellent opportunity to see and photograph these beautiful birds in their hundreds, diving into the sea at incredible speeds of 60 mph, and witness their behaviour during feeding time.
In the afternoon, we will move on to Bempton Cliffs by car which, from May to July, will be a hive of activity as Puffins, Guillemots and Razorbills will be busily feeding their chicks on nearby nests. Black-legged Kittiwakes can be seen here, as well as Fulmars, Herring Gulls, Shags and Cormorants. The sights, sounds and smells of these breeding seabirds make Bempton Cliffs one of the most spectacular locations to see and photograph seabirds in the UK. Corn Buntings, Common Whitethroats, Stonechats, Skylarks, Tree Sparrows, and Linnets nest in the grassland and scrub along the coast, while Kestrels and both Barn and Short-Eared Owls hunt beneath expansive skies.
Beyond the seabird colonies, the reserve is also home to a diverse array of other wildlife, including butterflies, moths, and wildflowers that thrive in the nearby meadows. On sunny days, you may see Painted Lady and Small Tortoiseshell butterflies, as well as the Six-spot Burnet moth and even the Hummingbird Hawkmoth. We will also have more opportunities to spot marine-life here from up high!
There is a toilet on board the boat. The harbour car park charge is £8.00 for the day.
Please note that the entry charge to the RSPB reserve is not included in the price of the Day Trip (£8 for non-members; free for members).
IMPORTANT: This trip is non-refundable for late cancellations made by you. Please note that all boat trips are subject to cancellation with notice as little as 24 hours if weather conditions are considered to be adverse by the skipper. We recommend not making any non-refundable booking arrangements around the trip.
