Summary

The Maldives comprise nearly 1,200 islands in the Indian Ocean that are world famous for their warm turquoise waters, coral reefs and white-sand beaches. Our holiday begins with a flight to the capital, Malé followed by a night on a nearby island. We then board our home for the next seven/eight nights, the MV Keana, and head out to explore the multitude of atolls and and islands. Each night we will anchor in a sheltered lagoon, and we will start each day with a chance to snorkel on the reef, keeping our itinerary deliberately flexible. Typically on a week-long cruise we could see as many as 12 species of cetacean and some 200 species of fish, as well as some interesting birds such as White-tailed Tropicbird and Lesser Frigatebird.

  • Exclusively chartered small ship cruise (max 16) focusing solely on searching for dolphins and whales, plus daily snorkelling
  • Led by marine biologist Dr Chas Anderson & a Naturetrek naturalist
  • Up to a dozen species of dolphin & whale possible
  • Chance to snorkel with Manta Rays
  • Species may include rarely seen Dwarf Sperm Whale & Longman’s Beaked Whale
  • Snorkel over some of the world’s most stunning coral reefs
  • Chance of encountering Whale Shark
  • Escape the northern winter to a tropical island paradise
  • Pre-cruise night on a beautiful resort island

Grading

Grade A. All island walks and snorkelling excursions are optional.

Far out in the Indian Ocean, nearly 600 kilometres to the south-west of India, lie the beautiful coral atolls of the Maldives. These really are the desert islands of our dreams — warm turquoise waters lapping against white sandy beaches edged with gently swaying palm trees! Many of the 1,192 islands that make up the archipelago (only 300 are inhabited) are also ringed by pristine coral reefs, famed for their marine-life which attracts divers and snorkellers from around the world. For many people these exquisite islands and encircling coral reefs require little introduction, but the waters surrounding the Maldives hold a less widely known, but equally exciting natural attraction, cetaceans. Over the past few years, 18 species of whale and dolphin have been recorded in these waters. Spinner, Bottlenose and Risso’s Dolphins are all common, as are Short-finned Pilot Whales, Sperm and Dwarf Sperm Whales. Even the Blue Whale, the largest animal thought to have ever inhabited the Earth, is seen regularly; and in recent years there have been increasing sightings of several of the beaked whale species, that group of rarely observed, deep ocean cetaceans that we still know very little about.

With such an abundance of marine-life on offer, the best way to explore this archipelago is by boat. We have therefore taken the exclusive charter of MV Keana — a comfortable cruise vessel that accommodates just 16 guests in en suite, air-conditioned cabins — for this voyage. This will be our home for seven nights as we explore the many bays, atolls and reefs in search of cetaceans, huge Manta Rays, graceful White-tailed Tropicbirds and an abundance of other marine-life.

Our holiday begins with a flight to Malé, the capital of the Maldives. After a night to enjoy our first taste of this tropical paradise, we will board the MV Keana and head out to explore the multitude of islands and atolls that dot these turquoise seas. Our exact itinerary will be kept flexible and in the hands of our guide, Dr. Chas Anderson, a professional marine biologist who has lived and worked in the Maldives since 1983. Each night we will anchor in a sheltered lagoon within one of the many atolls and start each day with the opportunity to snorkel on the reef. We will then head out to sea in search of cetaceans and other wildlife, returning to shelter once again in the evening, to snorkel, eat and sleep.

The great attraction of whale and dolphinwatching in the Maldives is the diversity of species that can be seen here. Past Naturetrek groups have seen as many as a dozen species, the calm clear waters often allowing unrivalled views. Large pods of Spinner Dolphins are a common sight leaping out of the water and twirling in the air as their name suggests. Risso’s and Striped Dolphins are also regularly seen, together with Cuvier’s Beaked Whale and Short-finned Pilot Whale. Dwarf Sperm Whale, the smallest ‘whale’, is common in the Maldives, but rarely seen elsewhere. Indeed, this cruise probably offers the best opportunity to see this elusive species anywhere in the world! Other species to look out for include Bryde’s and Sperm Whales, pods of False Killer Whales and a few rarities such as Rough-toothed Dolphin and Blainville’s Beaked Whale. For the very fortunate there is the ultimate goal of a Longman’s Beaked Whale, one of the rarest species in the world, but one that Dr. Anderson has seen, and photographed, several times in these waters!

Birdlife on the Maldives is not prolific, but there are some interesting and beautiful species to look out for. The graceful White-tailed Tropicbird is likely, along with Audubon’s Shearwaters and the menacing outlines of Lesser Frigatebirds. Of all the bird families, however, it is the terns that dominate here and we could see 10 or so species including Saunder’s Little Tern, Lesser Crested Tern, Black-naped Tern and Lesser Noddy.

The Maldives are rightly famous for their sea-life and, in addition to the cetaceans, our cruise will introduce you to a wealth of marine creatures from the diminutive clown fish to the mighty Manta. Over 1,000 species of fish have been recorded here and you can expect to see over 200 of these whilst snorkelling. Hawksbill and Green Turtles are another treat to look out for on the reefs, whilst flying fish are abundant in the open water and regularly flushed into the air as we cruise from one atoll to the next. Even a Whale Shark or two is possible! There will also be the opportunity to snorkel with Manta Rays, one of the ultimate marine experiences. The sight of one, or more, of these magnificent creatures (which have a wingspan of over two metres) effortlessly gliding past beneath will not only fill your thoughts on the long journey home but be sure to remain in the memory for life.

  • Keana was brilliant with ample cabin space and facilities as well as plenty of communal areas. It was a good vessel to observe and photograph from with a great crew. The food was ample and well prepared - Sheila's dietary requirements were always met. The Leaders were first rate and "packed" with knowledge. The talks that Chas gave were unbeatable. Sara went out of her way to care for the whole group and nothing was too much trouble.

    R.B. Dorset, Jan25
  • We enjoyed every minute of our trip. Even sitting on the top deck, or the dress circle for hours on end scanning the ocean for signs of fins was mesmerising. It was all very well organised and the food was consistently good. I have come away with a few recipes I am determined to try. The company of like-minded guests was much appreciated. Riding the prow of the dhoni with a pod of dolphins, manta evening, and Chas’ moonlight deck lecture were absolute highlights. Sara was an outstanding leader. On duty seemingly 24 hours a day, she anticipated each person’s needs and hopes, had an infectious enthusiasm for everything we saw and did, supported and encouraged us, remained calm and efficient throughout, and kept a few teasers up her sleeve. She was also extremely knowledgeable - we learnt a lot!

    G.K. North Yorkshire, Jan25
  • Sitting on the top deck looking out for dolphins and cetaceans as we cruised through the deep water areas. Just fabulous. Covered a broad range, which was perfect. And the wee trip in the island village was a lovely bonus. The boat was superb. Very practical layout and ample space. Food was delicious with good choice of options. Leaders were engaging, helpful, knowledgeable and always making sure everyone was getting the most from the trip.

    D.S. Highland, Jan25
  • Exactly as described in the brochure. Seeing a manta ray so close was wonderful. Charles Andersons talks were superb and his knowledge outstanding. Sara is a complete credit to your company. She is knowledgeable, kind, caring, and always with a friendly face. Nothing was too much trouble. She regularly pointed out fish etc when we were out snorkelling and mindful always of our safety. She worked really well with Charles and they were a good team.

    J.U. Worcestershire, Jan25
  • There was just so much to see, it's difficult to choose, but the top highlight had to be the sightings of the whale shark - numerous sightings and close! Followed closely by the sightings of Mantas. Not to mention all those colourful reef fish and of course the coral. The enthusiasm of the cruise leader and naturalist, Chas Anderson, was inspiring. He was a fountain of knowledge, and had many amusing tales to tell. The crew were so helpful and friendly, and the food was excellent. An absolutely fantastic holiday!

    S.B. Oxfordshire, Feb 24
  • As a first time traveler on my own I could not of asked for any more. The time I left the airport the information given to us for flights and everything was explained very easily which left me feeling very comfortable and now I feel a lot more positive and confident. Having a night spent at Bandos was absolutely beautiful and also having a change to learn to snorkel out there with Alison was a great experience as I haven’t snorkelled much. The over all experience of learning to snorkel was super. The whole team on the boat and both leaders were amazing. The trip overall was phenomenal all the information about the Maldives was so fascinating to listen to listing about the dragonflies was amazing. All I can say is thank you to everyone I definitely would love to do another Naturetrek as I just love nature and animals.

    A.W. Dorset, Jan 24

He was a fountain of knowledge, and had many amusing tales to tell. The crew were so helpful and friendly, and the food was excellent. Many thanks to you all for making this a fantastic holiday.

    S.B. Oxfordshire, Feb 24
  • I had never expected to see a whale shark (let alone 3) at such close quarters in the middle of the night - and I'm very grateful the crew was on watch for them. Similarly with the manta rays - I had thought we might encounter them while snorkelling (we did) but to have such astonishing views of them, for such a long time, from the boat was, again, amazing. I also appreciated seeing dolphins and pilot whales. Both Alison and Chas knew a lot and were happy to answer questions.

    P.H. Surrey, Jan 24
  • So many highlights! I loved the snorkeling and seeing so many wonderful fish including several reef sharks, turtle, Manta Ray and the delightful coral reefs. But the big wow factor was seeing the whale sharks under the light at the back of the boat on two occasions and we also saw a manta ray one evening. It was great to be so close to such big fish and to see them feeding.

    J.L. Shropshire, Feb 24
  • The whole holiday for me was mind blowing. It was absolutely magical being able to snorkel in different corals and it was incredible getting the opportunity to swim with Whale Sharks and Manta Rays. I absolutely loved seeing the dolphins as that was my first time ever seeing Pilot Whales. Such beautiful mammals. The accommodations was great, always kept clean tidy and looked comfortable and welcoming. The whole team were amazing. I felt I could always ask questions and they were always answered. Their knowledge was impeccable. I felt comfortable around the team and they made me feel so welcome. Chas Anderson and Alison Steel were incredible team leaders.

    A.W. Dorset, Jan 24
  • Being in the water alongside Whale Sharks and Manta Rays off the stern of the boat after dinner was a truly magical experience. Chas was an excellent guide and we felt in very good hands with Alison throughout the trip.

    M.H. Devon, Jan 24
  • Fantastic! I just loved this holiday, it met all my expectations. As a single traveller I felt supported and cared for. I enjoyed the company of my fellow passengers, the team leaders and the crews on the M/V Keana and dhoni were extremely helpful, supportive and friendly. Needless to say, the wildlife were outstanding.

    P.C. Middlesex, Jan 24
  • The boat was great, the family who owned it were on board and the combined knowledge, experience and enthusiasm of the family, crew and leaders; Cathy and Chas was instrumental in making the trip so enjoyable; because of this we witnessed so many beautiful marine creatures and had the unique opportunity to explore quiet reefs and deserted islands. I swam with Whale Sharks and Manta Rays, hung out with Turtles, Octopus and Moray Eels, Butterfly, Unicorn, Damsel fish. I taught myself to duck dive, I swam in the path of a shoal of Stingrays swimming underneath and all around me. A holiday of a lifetime. I had always wanted to travel with [Naturetrek] and I wasn't disappointed. From the staff in the office, booking and answering questions they were always there and helpful. Everything was run smoothly and superb organisation down to small details. The tour leaders Cathy and Chas Anderson were amazing. Cathy fizzled and bubbled excitement and enthusiasm with her sightings of Whales and Dolphins and always made sure everyone knew about the sightings by ringing the bell and going round to every cabin to let people know if she didn't see them on deck, so we didn't miss a thing. Chas Anderson's in depth knowledge and experience of where to find marine life, his adaptability and spontaneity ensured we experienced a wealth of wildlife.

    S.B. Hertfordshire, Feb 20
  • A first rate experience of living aboard the MV Keana touring the atols of the Maldives in search of whales, dolphins and manta rays in between twice daily snorkel trips around the islands. The snorkel sites were very varied offering a range of corals, fish, reef sharks and sting rays. On a couple of evenings, manta rays and whale sharks were found feeding under the spot lights at the back of the boat. Many of us entered the water and held on to the guide ropes to watch under the water. Magic! The accommodation was adequate & clean and the food amazing with 3 hot meals a day. The crew were friendly and most helpful. The Naturetrek guides ensured we got the best out of the experience.

    C.D. West Sussex, Feb 20
  • We were delighted to have such wonderful encounters with Pilot Whales, Risso's Dolphins, Spinner Dolphins... snorkelling with Manta Rays and Whale Shark, and (we were) amazed by the topography of the Maldives themselves....The overall feeling we had on our return was that we had been to an exotic world and loved every minute of it.

    Mr & Mrs T. Bristol
  • The snorkelling was fantastic, the manta rays and even a whale shark were swimming with us... The Spinner Dolphins put on a fantastic display. Thank you so much for a really memorable holiday.

    E.S. Dorset
  • [Paul Marshall] gave us lots of encouragement as novice snorkellers and without his help we would never have seen a manta ray... We learnt a huge amount about whales, dolphins and reef fish on the holiday as well as really enjoying life on the boat. The quiet efficiency of the captain and crew was impressive, and the relaxed style of the organisation made for a very good atmosphere.

    Mr & Mrs F. Derbyshire
  • A brilliant holiday - sun, sea, wildlife and snorkelling - what could be better!

    S.C. Cornwall
  • The whole holiday was an amazing experience - the boat, crew, food and Chas with his wealth of knowledge to share with us. If you told anyone that the hour-long 'lectures' each evening were sensational and left us wanting more information, they probably wouldn't believe you! The sight of a mother blue whale coming alongside the boat, looking like a submarine hull it was so huge, and then realising that it had a calf beside it was overwhelming - not something you expect to see in real life!

    D.W. Hampshire
  • The trip was very well organised and the staff on the Ari Queen were very helpful. The food, considering it was on board was very good, very imaginative and also could not have been fresher as it was virtually sea to table. Chas and Jenny also very good and were informative and helpful. A thoroughly good holiday.

    F.W. London
  • Chas Anderson was a superb tour leader and I enjoyed his nightly lectures very much. His lecture on the deck about the stars was an amazing experience.

    E.G. London
  • Jenny was an enthusiastic and thoughtful leader who looked after her 'flock' extremely well. Chas was an outstanding guide to the wonders of the Maldives combining amazing academic expertise with an unfailing human touch. The Ari Queen was an extremely comfortable vessel which was very well run. The staff were friendly and helpful, the food was excellent and plentiful - we loved the great variety of fish we were given, often caught the previous evening off the boat.

    Mr & Mrs B. Highlands
  • I loved this holiday from start to finish (particularly the snorkelling). This was my first holiday with Naturetrek so I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I was very well looked after, right from the pre-departure information that was sent out, all the way through to the end of the tour.

Tour Leader: Sara Frost

Sara works full time in Naturetrek's busy office as the Website and Marketing Manager. However, by training, she is a Zoologist, graduating from Newcastle University where she was also the president of the university's Zoological Society. Prior to working at Naturetrek she lived and worked in British Columbia, Canada, as a wildlife rehabilitator caring for Black Bears, Coyotes, River Otters and Raccoons on a daily basis. When she wasn't providing medical care to injured wildlife she could be found hiking in the mountains, photographing wildlife, howling with wolves and avoiding bears (usually successfully). On her return to the UK she moved to the Scottish Hebrides, where she spent three years working at sea as a wildlife guide, finding Minke Whales, Otters, dolphins and eagles for her guests on a daily basis! She also spent her summers as the Senior Wildlife Officer on a ship in the North Sea, collecting sightings data on whales and dolphins, and delivering marine biology lectures to guests.

Always keen to be involved with media, Sara has presented on both live radio and TV, has had her writing and photos published in multiple wildlife and travel magazines and has worked as a guide for Ray Mears and TV film crews for several natural history documentaries. A keen cetacean spotter, Sara specialises in leading Naturetrek's cruises in the Hebrides, Indonesia, the Maldives, Baja California and Arctic, as well as our holidays in the Azores.
