MADAGASCAR WILDLIFE HOLIDAYS

Tell me about Madagascar …

Madagascar is the fourth largest island in the world. It lies off the coast of east Africa, across the Mozambique Channel, and straddles the Tropic of Capricorn.

Madagascar enjoys an extensive network of protected areas, most of which are open to visitors. The park fees incurred on a tour in Madagascar go towards maintaining reserves, with some economic benefits to local people ensuring that Madagascar's tourist industry provides a good incentive to conserve its valuable ecology.

Its exceptional biodiversity and the disturbingly fast pace of environmental destruction make Madagascar a world conservation priority.

Why go on a wildlife tour in Madagascar?

Separated from the African mainland for some 165 million years, the island has developed in its own ecological niche. Today it possesses a unique and extremely diverse array of wildlife.

Endemics account for about 80% of its plants and 40% cent of its birds. Virtually all of these mammals, reptiles and amphibians occur nowhere else in the world, making Madagascar wildlife holidays truly unique experiences.

Madagascar is home to:

  • 34 known species of chameleon (whereas Africa has only 9!)
  • 30 lemurs (primates unique to Madagascar)
  • 7 baobabs (Africa has only one species)

... and many more.  Even now, as biological survey work continues, new species are still being discovered.
