Wildlife holidays in Bolivia
Tell me about Bolivia …
South America is an immensely varied continent, comprising extremes of climate and topography. There are certain images that most people associate as being typical of South America and many of these are realised in Bolivia.
Landlocked between Peru, Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay and Chile, the country has some stunning Andean scenery. The capital city La Paz – situated at an altitude of over 3,600 metres – is the highest in the world.
Over half the human population lives in the altiplano, a windswept plateau between two ranges of mountains, and many of the Indians living here still speak the ancient Aymara language which dates back to a pre-Inca civilisation.
Our Bolivia specialist recommends..
"Our ‘Bolivia – Highlands’ 12-day birdwatching holiday is a high altitude tour, visiting the temperate forests of Cochabamba and the spectacular mountains and altiplano of La Paz and Lake Titicaca. This tour can be combined with our ‘Bolivia – Lowlands’ holiday."
Nowhere else in South America are the national ethnic roots so pronounced as Bolivia. The Llama herders driving their animals down from high level grazing pastures live a lifestyle that has barely changed over the centuries.
Although the high mountains are the most dominant feature of the country, Bolivia also embraces a remarkable diversity of other habitats including Grand Chaco, Yungus cloudforest, tracts of unique Polylepis forest and sultry Amazonian jungle.
What’s special about the wildlife?
All but two of the Neotropical bird families are represented in the national bird list of over 1,350 species, which is one of the largest in the world and includes 18 endemic birds plus many other rarities.

WHAT YOU'VE BEEN SAYING ABOUT OUR Bolivia HOLIDAYS
I chose this holiday for the chance to see the natural history of the Bolivian Highlands, and wasnt disappointed. Visits to various habitats gave the opportunity for this, especially to look at the flora, of which I am particularly interested. In addition the ornithological & cultural aspects were excellent. The organisation & daily content were very good...The leader was extremely knowledgeable & competent, and high praise must go to our driver, who was always obliging and caring...Thank you for another most enjoyable Naturetrek holiday.
Just to let you know how much I enjoyed the Highlands tour. The birds found by Willie were brilliant and his driver Leo was a skilled driver who made me feel safe. The standard of accommodation and food were also excellent.
I very much enjoyed the tour and saw about 270 species of bird. The leader was excellent...his knowledge of the birds and their songs probably gave us more species than anticipated.
