Summary
Fleet Pond is the largest natural lake in Hampshire, nestling just to the north-east of Fleet in north Hampshire. Lead by ornithologist Martin Pitt, we will follow a circular path around the pond, focusing on the lake itself and additionally the mixed woodland that surrounds it. This is an area which is rich in wintering wildfowl including Mandarin and Goosander while the woodland holds flocks of winter visitors including Siskin and Redpoll, and even occasionally attracting Lesser Spotted Woodpecker. After the circuit we will head off to an area of lowland heath. Even at this time of year it should be possible to find Stonechat and Dartford Warbler and in some years these can be joined by a Great Grey Shrike. Expect to walk around six miles during the day.
- Look for interesting wintering wildfowl such as possible mandarin and Goosander
- Winter flocks of finches including Siskin and Redpoll
- Neighbouring heaths hold Stonechat and Dartford Warbler
