Wildlife holidays in Borneo

Tell me about Borneo …

The Malaysian Province of Sabah in northern Borneo is a prosperous state with a good infrastructure and excellent national parks system. Kota Kinabalu is Sabah’s affluent capital.

The impressive Mount Kinabalu (4,101 metres) is the highest mountain between the Himalaya and New Guinea. Mount Kinabalu National Park was established in 1964 to protect the massif and its surrounding area.
Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre was set up in 1964 to help once captive or displaced Orang-utans learn to fend for themselves back in the wild.

Our Borneo specialist recommends..

"If you are a primate fan, then the ‘Borneo’s Orang-utans’ tour could be for you. We explore the rainforests of Borneo in search of Orang-utans as well as other birds and mammals. For a birdwatching orientated holiday why not try our ‘Mount Kinabulu & the Rainforests of Borneo’."

What’s special about the wildlife?

Borneo is home to the oldest rainforests on Earth. The Danum Valley contains one of the last remaining tracts of primary lowland diptocarp forest and is renowned as one of the very best natural history sites in South-east Asia.

Sabah boasts over 200 species of mammal, 450 species of bird, over 8,000 plant species and a myriad of different insects!

A host of primates inhabits Borneo’s rainforests, the two best known being Orang-utan and Proboscis Monkey.
Sabah’s birdlife is as spectacular as it is diverse. Special species to see include: Bornean Bristlehead, Storm’s Stork, Philippine Scrubfowl, Rhinoceros Hornbill and Whitehead’s Broadbill, plus Bornean and Black-throated Wren-babbler.

Naturetrek Tours to Borneo

We offer three holidays to Borneo: a 21-day bird watching tour to Sabah’s lowland and montane forests, an 11-day holiday focusing on Orang-utans; a bargain bird watching tour to Sabah.

Can I see Orang-utans?

Our 11-day ‘Borneo’s Orang-utans’ holiday, run in conjunction with the wildlife charity Environmental Investigation Agency (EIA), includes a visit to Sepilok Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre. Orang-utans are the principal focus of this holiday, but we will also enjoy many other wildlife highlights.

In addition, we are likely to see Orang-utans on all three of our wildlife holidays to Borneo.

What wildlife might I see?

  • We’ll look for a host of bird species including hornbills, wren-babblers, frogmouths, trogons, pittas & broadbills
  • Many primates inhabit Sabah, such as Orang-utans, Proboscis Monkeys, gibbons, langurs & leaf monkeys
  • Other mammals include elephant, Banteng & flying squirrels
  • Plants such as Rafflesia & pitcher plants, plus some of the largest & most spectacular rainforest trees in the world
  • Our bargain bird watching holiday goes in search of the colourful avifauna of Borneo’s tropical forests & includes an optional extension to Mount Kinabalu National Park

Borneo - Sabah

We had a fantastic trip - was wonderful to see orang-utans in the wild on three different occasions along with all the other mammals and birds. Hazwan was a great tour leader - he was very patient and did work very hard to find all that we saw, very happy with what we saw. All the lodge staff were so very friendly and helpful and the lodges were wonderful places to stay in.

Borneo's Orang-utans

Terry was excellent - a good and amusing communicator, very personable and with a great knowledge of mammals, birds, reptiles and amphibians, and he was able to take on some invertebrates as well. Energetic and enthusiastic. Great stuff!

Greater Manchester
Borneo's Orang-utans

Very well organised with attention to detail. Great care was taken to meet the needs of all members of the group. It was a real privilege to share the expertise of Terry Reis and Hazwan Suban. This was my first wildlife holiday and a genuine learning experience!
