England & Scotland Birdwatching Tours

We’re offering two new holidays that deliver some of the best birdwatching in both England and Scotland. Each exists as a standalone holiday, or they can be booked together as one longer, and more comprehensive, tour.

The Best of England – A Birdwatching Tour
You will be met by your tour leader at Heathrow Airport, from where we will head to England’s premier birdwatching county, Norfolk. The wetlands, reedbeds, heaths and waterways here teem with birdlife and, amongst a plethora of species, we will look for Bearded Tit, Eurasian Bittern, Marsh Harrier, Stone Curlew as well as a host of waders and warblers. After a thorough exploration of the region from our ideally located hotel, we’ll drive north to Yorkshire, visiting England’s best land-based seabird colony en route at Bempton Cliffs! After enjoying close views of Puffin, Gannet, Guillemot and Razorbill we continue to the Pennines. Here, Red Grouse, Ring Ouzel and Merlin may be found on moorland, and we will rise early one morning to witness a Black Grouse lek. We will search for such woodland birds as Common Redstart, Pied Flycatcher and Wood Warbler, as well as breeding waders including ‘drumming’ Snipe, ‘piping’ Redshank and the ‘electronic’ calls of Lapwing; we’ll also keep an eye out along rivers for Dipper. Next we drive to Edinburgh, breaking our journey with an exciting boat trip around the famous Farne Islands in order to enjoy its Arctic Terns and busy seabird colony. Our final night will be spent in Edinburgh, and there will be time to explore this historic city before our tour concludes.

Combine both tours
The Best of Scotland – A Birdwatching Tour
Our ‘The Best of Scotland’ tour begins in Edinburgh, from where we head to Oban before crossing to the beautiful Isle of Mull. This island holds a wealth of wonderful wildlife and our time here will be spent searching for White-tailed and Golden Eagles among other species, and we’ll make a day-trip to the Treshnish Islands in search of Puffin, Guillemot, Shag and Kittiwake among many others. Along Mull’s picturesque shoreline we will look for Otters, while Great Skua often patrol offshore. A trip to nearby Iona may reward us with Corncrake. Next we leave Mull and continue our tour on the mainland, driving north to the rugged Cairngorms National Park. Avian delights here may include Ptarmigan, Snow Bunting, Dotterel and Twite, and we’ll make dedicated trips to find Crested Tit, Hen Harrier and Osprey. We will look for Slavonian Grebe and Red-throated Diver, both of which will be in breeding plumage at this time of year, while mammals may include Badger and Pine Marten which we will hope to observe from a purpose-built hide. We return to Edinburgh for our final night and our onward connections the following day.

We highly recommend combining the two tours in order to experience the best birdwatching England and Scotland have to offer. A wonderful range of species should be encountered while exploring a superb mix of habitats.
