Wildlife Holidays in Colombia
Tell me about Colombia …
Colombia lies just north of the equator on the western side of South America. It is a hugely diverse country whose climatic variations are determined by trade winds, humidity and especially by altitude.
In the north of the country, just 42 kilometres from the Caribbean coast, is the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta, the world's highest coastal mountain range. In fact, the highest mountain in Colombia is not in the Andes but in the Sierra Nevada – both Pico Cristobal Colon and Pico Simon Bolivar tower to just under 5,800m.
What’s special about the wildlife?
Its bird life is spectacular – Colombia has the largest bird list of any country in the world! A staggering 1871 species have been recorded, of which 74 are endemic.
The ridge of the Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is home to a number of ecoregions and the highest concentration of endemic bird species in Colombia occurs here (more than 30 endemic species).
