The rainforests of Borneo are among the most species-rich habitats on earth, and this ‘Bargain Birdwatching tour’ focuses on the splendid birdlife to be found in these fast disappearing forests. We visit Sepilok Reserve (famous for its nearby Orang-utan Rehabilitation Centre), the Kinabatangan River and Gomantong Caves before concluding with three days at Tabin. A fantastic bird list includes hornbills, malkohas, broadbills, pittas and many other colourful Asian specialities. Mammals such as Orang-utan and Proboscis Monkey are also likely to be seen, while an optional post-tour extension to Mount Kinabalu offers yet more of Borneo’s endemic birds.

  • Pristine rainforests
  • Varied and colourful avifauna
  • Bornean Bristlehead and other endemic bird species
  • Orang-utan, Proboscis Monkey and other mammals
  • The Gomantong Caves (for bats, swiftlets and edible-nest harvesting)
  • Expertly guided by a Malaysian ornithologist

All meals are included except evening meals on Day 5 and 9 (allow £10 per meal)

Comfortable tourist lodges at Sukau and Mount Kinabalu. Simple but comfortable lodges and hotels elsewhere.

Sabah is widely recognised as one of the most productive birding destinations in South-East Asia and boasts an amazing avifauna which includes such mouth watering possibilities as Bornean Bristlehead (in its own endemic family) sumptuous Pittas (including the endemic Blue-headed and Black-and-crimson), several species of Broadbills and Trogons, the endangered Storm’s Stork (at one of its few remaining strongholds), amazing Rhinoceros Hornbills (and up to seven other Hornbill species), raptors such as Wallaces’s Hawk Eagle, Bat Hawk and endemic White-fronted Falconets plus Buffy Fish Owls and a wealth of other rainforest birds. This semi-autonomous region in the north-east corner of Borneo is familiar territory for Naturetrek and we have been operating wildlife tours to Sabah for over twenty years but hitherto the focus of these tours has been on a wider natural history theme and not specifically the birds. Naturetrek Tour Leader Chris Kehoe has been a regular visitor to Sabah and with the benefit of his experience we are pleased to rectify this deficiency in our programme by offering a brand new Bargain Birdwatching tour in August 2009. Like the other tours in our Bargain Selection range, this will be an intensive birding holiday, packing as much as we can into the time available. At the end of the main tour there will be an opportunity to extend the holiday by five days to visit Mount Kinabalu National Park which is home to a number of species endemic to the Bornean mountains.

Excellent accommodation and food. Guides were good throughout. Night trips and boat trips excellent. No wasted time.
The overall tour leader, Hamit, was better than very good, not only with his encyclopaedic knowledge, but always helpful.
Hamit was outstanding, one of the best ever. The leader was superb, found birds, general knowledge and people skills outstanding.
We had a fantastic trip - was wonderful to see orang-utans in the wild on three different occasions along with all the other mammals and birds. Hazwan was a great tour leader - he was very patient and did work very hard to find all that we saw, very happy with what we saw. All the lodge staff were so very friendly and helpful and the lodges were wonderful places to stay in.
