Join us at our Open Day on 3rd May 2013
Red Fox (Bret Charman)
Please do join us for hot drinks and cakes at Naturetrek's Cheriton Mill offices on our next Open Day on Friday 3rd May. Our expert staff will be on hand to chat with you about your travel plans for 2013 and beyond (though, please note, you will need to phone the office beforehand to book a time with the staff member best suited to discuss your area of interest).
Guided wildlife walks:
If you would also like to join us for a taste of the wildlife of Cheriton Mill and the upper Itchen Valley, there will also be a chance to join our naturalists Dan Free and Dave Shute on a local wildlife walk (at 11am and 2pm).
Recent sightings at the Mill
Our 'pylon perched' Peregrine is still with us, currently revelling in the glut of Wood Pigeons, and we recently discovered a flock of about 30 Lesser Redpolls feeding in a game-crop at the edge of a field nearby. A Kingfisher is taking advantage of the unfrozen spring-fed stream, but the Water Vole is only making sporadic appearances in the Mill pond now, no doubt spending more time in the warmth of its burrow. The cold snap has brought our Barn Owls out before dark on an almost daily basis (from 3pm onward!), with up to 4 having been seen on occasions, hunting over the water meadows. Boxing Hares, foxes and Roe Deer have also been seen.
