Latest News - Tour of the Month (April 2007): Kazakhstan - A Birdwatching Tour

For over 20 years Kazakhstan has been a favourite spring destination for keen European birders. The spectacular Tien Shan mountains add a touch of Himalayan splendour to the scenery and oriental magic to the avifauna but some of the most prized target birds of visiting groups are the regional specialities such as McQueen's Bustard, Yellow-eyed Stock Dove and White-winged Lark augmented in May be a flood of migrant passerines. This is a land where the exotic mingles with the familiar and a visit in spring provides opportunities to study in detail many of the birds better known in western Europe as rare autumn vagrants. Students of taxonomy might also enjoy the challenge presented by some of the contentious local races of more widespread species! Whatever your preference, whether it be a taste of the Himalaya or migration on a grand scale, Kazakhstan is a country not to be missed.
